BEA 2010: The Next Decade in Book Culture

logo_bluThree Muses and our parent company, Ink & Paper Group, have attended and exhibited at Book Expo America several times, but this year we tuned in from afar. The BEA festivities have wrapped up for this year, with overall good reviews now circulating in the world of words. Being forward-thinking publishing folk, we found the May 29 National Book Critics Circle panel discussion “The Next Decade in Book Culture” intriguing, and thought you might like to be a fly on the virtual wall. Here is a link to the event video posted on their Critical Mass blog.

Happiness is…

wallystandingbypostA happy author! Wallace J. Swenson, author of Morgan’s Pasture, had this to say when he recently took a peek at the proof of his new book: “Odd feelings swirl and compete with one another for attention: teary, jubilant, humility, pride, confusion.  Hard to describe in one word because it changes from moment to moment.  Right now I’m thankful.”

We’re thankful here at Three Muses, too. The author is a gem, and so is his first published novel.

Near death experience, poetry, and quantum physics?

img_1456croprgbIn a recent Examiner.com interview, poet Ana Callan (Duet with Hummingbird, Three Muses Press) discusses how her near death experience “became this incredible gift. I got to see the love and the perfection of everything—no matter how it looks. There’s a harmony to all things. Everything is divinely inspired.” So how does quantum physics enter the discussion? Read the full interview to find out.

Enjoy Ana Callan’s presentation “The Gift of Aging,” as part of Multnomah County Library’s  monthly series, Perspectives on Positive Aging. Bring lunch and enjoy an inspiring hour with Ana.

Wednesday, May 5, noon to 1:00 p.m.
Central Library
U.S. Bank Room
801 SW 10th Ave.
Registration not required. This event is free and open to the public.

Promote and Enjoy Poetry!

davejareckiApril is National Poetry Month, and we are already a week into it. Feed your love of poetry by reading (or writing?) a poem a day. Bookmark literary site davejarecki.com to start each day with the work of a poet from Portland and beyond.

shelfawarenessWant to see and hear poetry in action? Check out the Shelf Awareness bit that follows.

Cool Idea of the Day: Daily Poetry Videos (quoted from Shelf Awareness, 4/7/2010)

“To celebrate National Poetry Month, DIESEL, whose stores are in Oakland, Malibu and Brentwood, Calif., has made 30 videos of booksellers from the three stores reading poems. During April, the videos are being released daily, one per day, on the store’s blog and on the National Poetry Month page of its website. The videos in color have been released; the ones in black and white have yet to appear.”

Enjoy!

Spring Writer’s Retreat for Women

pww-logo-copy

Dawn Thompson, friend of Three Muses Press and Portland Women Writers workshop facilitator just shared news of an upcoming writer’s retreat within Oregon’s Silver Falls State Park. Check out the details here.

May 14–16
Spring Women’s Writing Retreat:
Freeing the Wild Feminine

combining Astrology and Sacred Story work

with Emily & Dawn
at Silver Falls Conference Center, Sublimity, OR

“We are all filled with a longing for the wild. There are few culturally sanctioned antidotes for this yearning. We were taught to feel shame for such a desire. We grew our hair long and used it to hide our feelings. But the shadow of the Wild Woman still lurks behind us during our days and in our nights. No matter where we are, the shadow that trots behind us is definitely four-footed.” - Clarissa Pinkola Estes

Idaho Magazine Fiction Contest

Wallace J. SwensonGood news from Three Muses Press! The good folks managing the Idaho Magazine Fiction Contest recently informed Morgan’s Pasture author Wallace J. Swenson that he has a “winning entry.” We here at Three Muses Press have long known he is a winner, but we are mighty curious about the results of this annual short story contest featuring Idaho writers. Readings and an award presentation will take place on April 10 at Barnes & Noble in Boise, Idaho. Good luck, Wally!
